The government is expected to improve the quality of education and rehabilitation for prisoners to facilitate their better reintegration into society, according to a draft revision law being reviewed by Chinese lawmakers.

The draft amendment to the Prison Law was submitted to the ongoing session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, on Sunday for the first deliberation.

Since its implementation in 1994, the current law has played a significant role in punishing and correcting criminals, with achievements in preventing and reducing offenses, and safeguarding national security and social stability, a statement provided by the NPC Standing Committee noted.

In the new era, with profound social transformations and the public's escalating demands for the rule of law, justice and security, prisons are grappling with novel challenges, which underscores the necessity of amending the law to guarantee the prison work adhere to a well-organized and law-abiding path, the statement said.

While prioritizing prison security and safeguarding prisoner's legitimate rights, the draft revision has also introduced enhanced protocols for inmate rehabilitation and streamlines the management of correctional officers — the pivotal measures in advancing a safer society.
