Social media: Chinese netizens react to US tariffs

With the United States escalating its tariff actions over the past two weeks, a fervent discussion has erupted on Chinese social media platforms among ordinary netizens. Many express confidence in China's ability to navigate the tariffs, believing the impact will be more significant on Americans than on themselves.

On short-video platforms of WeChat and Douyin, some support the Chinese decisions and measures, saying "believe the wisdom of China, we can tackle this." And some claim the US tariffs are a number game. "Is there any difference between 145 percent and 245 percent?" While a number of netizens said they will focus on their own business and life and there is no need to be afraid as they can do their part to consume products affected by the US policies.

On Weibo, people showed concerns over the devastating impacts on the US economy and ordinary American’s life. One netizen said that the American government’s on and off tariff policies will eventually have a devastating impact on America's credibility worldwide?, as the products from China are very difficult to be replaced in a short period of time. In a mocking tone, one said, "The US, a country does not produce, imposes tariffs on the whole world. How ridiculous!"
