Zhang Yansheng, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Macroeconomic Research, said during an exclusive interview with China Perspective that the tariff war initiated by the Trump administration indicates that the US is walking away from its role as a major player in the drive for global trade liberalization.
The key for China in responding to the US tariffs is figuring out how to turn a bad situation into an opportunity. That means expanding domestic demand as well as deepening reforms and opening up. In this way, the more the rest of the world engages with China through interaction and cooperation, the more prosperous everyone will become.
